I led the creation of HeartAware, a mobile-first health tool designed to tackle the silent crisis of undiagnosed heart conditions in underserved communities. Built for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, the project combined accessible technology with cultural insight to reimagine early detection through something almost everyone owns, a smartphone. This was more than a concept. It was a solution built from urgency, empathy, and a refusal to let inequality stay invisible.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the UK, yet early signs often go undetected, especially in ethnic minority communities. A lack of accessible tools, awareness, and trust in the system means many people only find out when it is already too late. Traditional health tech is often expensive, disconnected from culture, or overly complex. We saw a clear gap, the need for a simple, low-barrier solution that could meet people where they are and catch the signs before it's too late.

I led the full design and development process using React, mapping the interaction flow in Figma and building core functionality with Google Cloud and Gemini API. In the early stages, I used Teachable Machine to experiment with model training and pulse recognition logic before refining the system into a lightweight, real-time web app. I tested across multiple devices to ensure consistency, accuracy, and accessibility, making sure the final experience felt simple, trustworthy, and grounded in real utility.

The solution was HeartAware, a smartphone-based tool that uses photoplethysmography to detect early signs of heart irregularities through the phone’s flashlight and camera. I built the prototype using React and Google Cloud, integrating Gemini API to support signal logic and enhance feedback accuracy. The experience was designed to function as a standalone tool or integrate into NHS systems, translating complex health data into clear, culturally sensitive guidance for everyday users.
